HCMC - Once the Paris in the Orient

In 2016 I used my mileages to exchange an Elite Class flight ticket to Ho Chi Minh City, which is also well-known Saigon as its former name. On the 2nd of July, 1976, after the reunification of the country, in commemoration of the main founder of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Labor Party Chairman Ho Chi Minh, Saigon became renamed "Ho Chi Minh City".

As I travelled there during the Lunar New Year in Taiwan, coincidentally, it's also the New Year time in Vietnam as well. There were also many Vietnamese travelling back home for the celebration in my flight. I sensed well not only just the heat but also the friendly people there welcoming me.

It was quite convenient to do money exchange in HCMC, I exchanged immediately 100 USD in the airport, as the currency of 1 USD equals to approximately 22.000 VND. After the exchange, the staff made fun to congratulate me being a millionaire. There are also many exchange booths in the city centre, District 1, also, I don't think Vietnam is a paradise for shopaholics, so just exchange the amount when you have to use cash, otherwise, as the exchange rate of VND varies a lot every day.

My transportation there is either on foot or by taxi. As my hotel is located in the District one, Hotel Continental Saigon, I can easily reach to almost all the famous sightseeing spots walking, and it's also convenient for me to grab a cab to somewhere far away. The taxis I took in HCMC are all from Vinasun Corp., it's not so expensive to take a cab there. I remember, the way from the airport to my hotel cost around 12.000 VND, which equaled to around 5.5 USD.

I didn't spend much time in HCMC, I wanted to come here because of a film: The Lover, which I saw when I was still little, even I didn't really understand it very well, somehow I had a deep impression in mind. When I watched it again when I was older, I sensed the human beings' complex emotions about love, lust, desires, reality and the sadness in all of the characters under that era in Saigon, or simply just all the Vietnam. I always wanted to step in this city to see its joys and sorrows from the old time that made it.

There are actually not many sightseeing spots as other Vietnamese cities in HCMC, in general people come here to see those colonial heritages such as Ho Chi Minh City Hall, Saigon Central Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon, Independence Palace (Reunification Palace) and Hotel Continental Saigon, etc. I also visited the War Remnants Museum to testify the history of cruelty in Vietnam War.

Besides the touristic spots, I think the most attractive side of this city which was called Saigon, the Paris in the Orient, the messy traffic and the people who work on the street side to earn their living. Each face and each stand have his own story behind to reflection this current city. For me, it's the most interesting thing to walk in the city, imagining what kind of stories can each of them tell me.
